West Yorkshire Police's Wildlife and Rural Crime team said this was one of 85 incidents over the last 5 days.

In a Facebook post, officers said the cruel incident saw the bird shot with a catapult before it was fed to a dog at Wykebeck Woods, Leeds.

On average, 17 cases have been reported daily within the short period of time, bringing the total to 85 across the force area.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police Wildlife & Rural Crime said: "In the last 5 days there have been 85 incidents involving animals across the force area.

"On July 4 unknown suspects stole fish from Horbury Lagoon at Wakefield and youths have shot a bird with a catapult and fed it to their dog at Wykebeck Woods, Leeds."

The spokesperson added that officers also dealt with a number of cases where dogs had been left in hot cars at various locations around the force."
