Youths charged regarding alleged assault and disorder at Wishaw supermarket

Three youths have been charged regarding an alleged assault at a Wishaw supermarket.

Police confirmed to Lanarkshire Live last week they were following “a positive line of enquiry” following a spike in antisocial behaviour at Tesco Extra in Belhaven Road.

And this week officers confirmed three boys - aged just 13 and 14 - have been charged regarding an alleged assault and disorderly conduct.

Area Inspector Alan Mulholland told Lanarkshire Live : “There have been a number of reported incidents from staff and members of the public regarding young people attending Tesco and making the lives of staff and shoppers very difficult.

“This is relatively small group of youths who are intent on causing disorder and there have also been reported acts of violence against staff.

“Our officers are following positive lines of enquiry, using CCTV and speaking with witnesses and so far two males aged 13 and one male aged 14 have been charged regarding an alleged assault and disorderly conduct.”

Inspector Mulholland also moved to reassure staff and customers of the store of the steps police are taking in order to curb antisocial behaviour.

He added : “We have deployed our specialist motorcycle officers to tackle the issue as well and plain cloths and directed response patrols.

“Over the Christmas and New Year period we will be in and about the busy shopping areas of the town and will continue to make enquiries to trace all of the youths responsible.

“I would also make a plea to shoppers as you go about your shopping to keep yourself safe, keep money safe and in an inside pocket, keep bags and possessions close to you at all times and report anything suspicious to the Police or a security guard.”
