Youths allegedly ripping up plants, starting fires and smashing up glass bottles at sand dunes in Swansea

Youths are allegedly ripping up plants, setting fires and smashing glass bottles at the sand dunes in Swansea, it has been claimed.

There have been problems near the Swansea Marina area over the last few years with groups of youths congregating, drinking alcohol and starting grass fires.

In 2019, residents spoke out about gangs of youths and how they have had to deal with threats, with the situation leaving some people wanting to leave.

During the first weekend of sunshine this year, one resident claims that the anti-social behaviour, near the observatory, has returned.

Facebook group MQRA - Maritime Quarter Residents Association, posted on the social media site about the incident, which they say took place on Sunday, February 28.

One post said: "First nice weekend of the year, and the anti-social behaviour has started in the dunes. Ripping up the marram grass and other plants, setting fires, smashing glass bottles, drink and substance abuse and shouting obscenities at residents.

"These kids seem unaware that the dunes are overlooked by hundreds of apartments."

One resident, who asked not to be named said that the group who he believes was aged between 14-17, arrived at lunchtime on Sunday and were in the area for most of the day.

"Yesterday was the start of kids going into the dunes and lighting fires, I just don't get it.

"It will continue now unless something is done about it. Yesterday was the first time (this year) we have had trouble, smashing bottles, lighting fires, abusing residents because they are drunk.

"It's the same every single year."

The resident said that the group left around 6.30pm and the incident was reported to South Wales Police.

"There was six in that particular group, they gather and they hide in little pockets in the dunes and you know they are there when you see the smoke start to rise and you think 'here you go'.

"A lot of the very elderly residents feel very intimated by it. Once they (youths) come off the dunes they're strolling around either on the prom or between the blocks of flats and they are all shouting and screaming.

"They left because people were shouting at them at the flats and that's when the abuse started," he added.

South Wales Police attended the area early evening.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: "Officers attended the dunes area twice early yesterday evening after being made aware of possible anti-social behaviour and Covid-19 breaches – no offences were witnessed and no further action was taken.

"If anyone has further information we ask them to contact us via 101."
