Youth's lucky escape in Wangi power station elevator fall

HIGH RISK: The lift shaft rises above the rest of the building.

A YOUTH of about 15 has had a lucky escape after falling four storeys from the top of a 12-storey lift shaft in the disused Wangi Wangi power station on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The youth was taken to John Hunter Hospital with a broken arm, after rescue teams abseiled from the top of the lift shaft to rescue him from the ledge they said saved his life.

Police, ambulance and Westpac rescue helicopter spokespeople said an emergency call was received at 1.50pm yesterday, alerting them to the fall.

They said he was brought out of the building at about 3.45pm.

They were unable to confirm if he was by himself but said he was lucky to be alive because the ledge broke what would have been a fatal fall to the ground.
