Youth club launches virtual activity sessions to help youngsters during coronavirus outbreak

A North Somerset youth club is to host virtual sessions to keep young people occupied during the coronavirus outbreak.

Portishead Youth Club has had to suspend its regular sessions at its Harbour Road base due to the UK wide lockdown.

Now youth workers will be launching daily virtual youth club sessions from next week.

The session will mean youngsters can access activities via their laptop, phones and tablets.

The sessions will include cooking, arts and crafts and sports and exercise activities.

Details of what platform the sessions will be streamed on are now being finalised.

A spokesman for the youth club said: “Whilst the regulations on organisations like ours mean that we need to cease our traditional youth work delivery, it doesn't mean we can't still be there for any child or young person who needs us.

“Our staff will be launching daily virtual youth club sessions, from next week.

“Children and young people will be able to join us using their phone, tablet or laptop every day Monday-Thursday for fun sessions from the safety of their homes.”

The club is also asking for ideas from young people about what activities the sessions should feature.

“We would also welcome ideas from young people as to what they would like to see during these sessions - get in touch.”

The youth club will also be continuing its one to one support for young people with telephone and online sessions.

The spokesman added: “This is a hugely worrying time for so many, and in particular children and young people so we are continuing our support with online or telephone based one to one sessions for any child or young person who needs us.

“We are putting together a timetable of contact sessions that all children and young people in our community are able to access.

“Anything from a one off phone call, to daily check-ins, we are here to be of as much help as possible.

“All our online sessions are being run by qualified and experienced youth workers with our normal high standard of safeguarding.”

Anyone who would like a one to one session or has ideas for the online sessions can email kim@portisheadyouthcentre.co.uk or call 01275 842461.
