Police boost presence in civic following retailer safety fears

Canberrans will see an increased police presence in the city centre over the next few weeks, especially around peak times, to tackle anti-social and criminal behaviour.

The "CBD Safe" operation does not have an end date, and is a response to feedback from the community and retailers about feeling unsafe in the central business district.

It also follows recent incidents reported in the area.

According to ACT Policing, a cab driver, on Friday, June 12, reported three men had threatened to stab him while he was dropping them off to their destination.

Police officers found the three alleged offenders later that night on Bunda Street.

The three men accused of threatening the driver included a 19-year-old from Dickson, a 23-year-old from Conder, and a 22-year-old from Farrer.

Additionally, while police were dealing with the trio, a man went up to the officers and alleged he had just been robbed and assaulted by the same men.

"Police subsequently located property belonging to the victim in the possession of the offenders," an ACT Policing spokeswoman said.

It is alleged, the Dickson teenager had signed bail conditions less than a day before the incident and the Conder resident had breached his bail condition and was wanted by police at the time.

All three men were charged with joint commission of aggravated robbery, assault, and theft.

The alleged teenage offender was charged with breaching bail and three good behaviour orders, while the 23-year-old man was additionally charged with providing a fake name and address to police, resisting police, breaching bail conditions and failing to appear in court.

"Where criminal offending occurs - action will be taken. However, in many situations support services will be the most appropriate pathway to assist an individual," police have said in a statement.

"The operation will also focus on public intoxication and the unsafe behaviours associated with it."

Police teams plan to meet with CBD businesses to note issues and concerns and where appropriate, liaise with government and other agencies to address these matters, the police spokeswoman said.

Shop operators and members of the public have been urged to report incidents to police on patrol, at City Police Station, or by calling 131 444.

The spokeswoman said there would be cop "pop-ups" in the city district so people could meet and talk to law enforcement in an informal setting.

The CBD Safe operation will add to patrols by City Patrol and Territory Targeting teams, a police spokesman said.

He said police could not say how many additional officers would be sent to the city for operational reasons.

"Suffice to say there will be dedicated officers allocated to this operation each day and they will be drawn from areas across ACT Policing," the police spokesman said.
