Your weekend Uber trips are going to be more expensive - here’s why

If you’re taking an Uber trip in Central London on a weekend night then it’s going to be more expensive from Thursday 8, November.

Uber is raising prices from Thursday to Sunday between 10pm and 6am by 20p per mile, from £1.25 up to £1.45, and 5p per minute, from £0.15 to £0.20, for each ride.

Base fares will remain the same, at £2.50, and the minimum fare will stay at £5. But all rides taken in London’s Congestion Charge Zone, which essentially covers Zone One, will be cost a little bit more.

The thinking behind the increase is that this will provide higher earnings to drivers, which will incentivise them to take more trips in Central London, particularly in busy areas such as Shoreditch and Soho. As an Uber passenger, hopefully, this should mean there are more Uber cars available, creating a more reliable service.

Given the small price increase, it shouldn’t make a huge difference. Uber says that a trip with no surge pricing on a Saturday night from Borough Market to Elephant and Castle will now cost £5.85 under the new structure, compared to £5.15 beforehand.

And remember this is just for trips taken in the Congestion Charge Zone. If you’re not going through this area, your rides will remain at the same price.

An Uber spokesperson said: “We’re making these changes to help provide a better experience, by attracting more drivers to some of our busiest areas.

“We know people use Uber to book a safe trip home and we want to ensure we’re providing a reliable service, particularly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, when more people want to travel.”

Remember, if you object to Uber’s pricing, you can always take the night tube.
