Three cheers for Hadley Freeman’s explosion of the “wellness” myth (Does My Juice Look Big In This, 27 June). As Paul McArdle of the British Dietetic Association points out, calling yourself a nutritionist has no legal meaning, but is often used as a cover for food “experts”. As a coeliac, I am irritated by the gluten-intolerance industry. Coeliac disease is an auto-immune condition, not an intolerance, and it would be foolish to go on a gluten-free diet without first seeing a qualified doctor.

There are many nutritionists whose work and training is based on evidence-based practice. They are easily distinguished from the rest because they’re on the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists, governed by the Association for Nutrition. The AfN is seeking statutory protection of the title “nutritionist” to protect the public and assure the credibility of the nutrition profession. The sooner the better, for all of us.

Through friends of friends, I met Terry Sue-Patt socially a few times over the last 10 years. I was of the Grange Hill generation, but I didn’t make the connection, and neither did he mention it. He was warm, wise, engaging and interested in listening to other people, a rarity among those who achieve major success at a young age.

Simon Hattentstone’s article was a lovely eulogy. Every death is tragic, but other reporters needed something to make it dramatic. This 50-year-old man had not been drinking, taking drugs, or died in suspicious circumstances. He just died. I was nine when Grange Hill started, and TSP helped educate me, and understand a bit about racism and bullying.

Let me tell you about a real victim of corrupt athletics. He is 17, tall, strong and fast, but will in all likelihood never be better than second rate because he’ll never use performance-enhancing drugs. He is my son, and one of countless other young athletes condemned to be also-rans, because they won’t cheat.

Yet again an aspect of my private life has been exposed for public ridicule by Stephen Collins. When will these intrusions stop?
