Piers Morgan talks about being stuck with a bore at a party. The words pot and kettle come to mind.
Phil Edgar

Hooray, Lucy Mangan’s back in the magazine. It was like an old friend reappearing just in time for Christmas. A treat. More?
Margarete Parrish
Bournemouth

As a non-smoker, I can’t see why I’d vape. Smoking the odd fag in my teens never held much attraction, so I’m not sure about the argument it would get non-smokers into it. But vaping has a place now. It’s not the healthiest habit, but it’s better than cigarettes.
Catherine Bingham
Bristol

After reading about the volunteer lifesavers, I feel a bit of a lazy, churlish arse by comparison.
Gervase Webb
London N5

I love Maisie Williams’ spirit. As a teen, I, too, was a world-weary adult. Then I got to 20 and realised how foolish I’d been, because I had it totally figured out now. Then at 25, and at 30. Give it time, and have as much fun as possible along the way.
Cleary Alansail
California

I’m a cheesemonger, and luckily only about 5% of our customers fall into the cheese bore category, but Catherine Bennett’s piece was most accurate. Decent cheese is worth the effort and expense, but a light-hearted transaction is also good.
Roxanne Hargreaves
London SE15

Anyone left alone in old age could have written the octogenarian widow’s article. Those who do get together at this age tend to do so with someone they have known and trusted for years. Otherwise, it’s safer to settle for a life of self-indulgence and emotional calm, and the consolation it won’t last for ever.

My dad is a fit, sociable 87-year-old widower who loves the outdoors, reads avidly and is at times lonely. He’d never use an online dating service, but how about a Blind Date? Sounds a perfect match.
Wendy Hughes
Flintshire, North Wales

Andrew Clifford should know that in UK academia, a mark of 7/10 is borderline first class, and so highly recommended. It’s a bit like the way a 74-gun ship was a great battleship, yet was also a “third rate”.
Simon Higgins
Liverpool

Thank you, Andrew Clifford, for your support. I also believed I was worthy of a more generous score. But when I questioned Chris’s rating, he said, “Isn’t a 7 what everyone gives each other – not too mean, not too keen?”
Katie Susser
London NW6
