"How did the sacked editor of the Daily Mirror – aka the disgraced Piers Morgan, Private Eye's Piers Moron – go on to become CNN'S leading anchorman?" asked your contents page. Watch CNN's output and you'll find your answer. There's still a delusion in some parts of the US that says that an English accent means someone automatically knows what they're talking about.

Why would Simon Hattenstone feel the need to write "organic carrots" on a shopping list? It's almost as if he wanted his ethical list to be seen.

Post-Snowden, I can't watch shows like Homeland. There are an astounding number of US TV programmes and movies that centre on the CIA, FBI, NSA, all doing whatever the hell is necessary to get those bad guys, most portraying the Yanks as saviours of the free world. I've had enough.

Best wisdom I heard on kids leaving home was from an old South African woman: "We give our kids two things: roots and wings." By the way, I would have been embarrassed to be driven to college by my folks. Got the train with a backpack, a saxophone and four tinnies for the journey.

I know the scenario Lucy Mangan describes. My mum's carers all performed a demanding role at least adequately. Sometimes they went above and beyond, as they did when they revived her with CPR, despite instructions to stand back from any medical emergency and wait for an ambulance. She would have died if they hadn't intervened. I would pay them 10 times what they earn for the job they do. Their managers, however, are a different breed.

My mother receives four 15-minute visits each day, to administer medications, make a snack and tea, clear away. Much cheerful chatting is done and it's an excellent service. Once a week she gets a longer visit. In some circumstances, this might be inadequate, but for her it's changed her ability to manage at home.

Please, one week can we have a recipe that is grounded in reality: four pigeon breasts, marinated for at least 12 hours?

Much as I admire Oliver Burkeman's weekly insights, I have to say that I experience minor irritation when meat eaters like him opt for the scarce veggie option on planes (or, indeed, at social gatherings), leaving the vegetarian with not just disappointed expectations, but nothing to eat. Or maybe I should just expect that.

Andrew Clifford asks if anyone in the world got the answer to question 15 of the 5 October Quiz . Well, I did, which probably makes me a cordobas ringgit (tragic boring sod).
