Good luck to Tess Holliday; she seems to be a confident, charismatic, spirited woman. But any celebration of a size 26 supermodel should be seen in its wider context: a growing number of people who are unhealthily overweight or obese, and a grotesque global divide: a large slice of the world’s population eating too much, while millions have hardly enough.

I am one of six siblings in their 50s and 60s, four of whom have type 2 diabetes, plus many weight-related health issues. Tess, for your own sake, wake up and realise you are in danger as the years roll on.

Thanks to Rebecca Seal for her moving account of infertility. However, I don’t think I’ve read a feature on this subject where the outcome was not positive. The reality is different: more than two-thirds of couples come out empty-handed. It would be of benefit to hear these stories, although I suspect for many, including myself, it’s too painful to talk about.

We, too, were diagnosed as infertile at the age of 31. We were given a positive prognosis; however this did not prove to be the reality. If you had said to me five years ago this would consume me, I would have laughed: I love my work and studying and have travelled the world. However, none of this matters. We would give it up in a heartbeat.

The second world war veterans are giants. Both my grandfathers served: one survived D-day and the Ardennes; the other was an officer in the merchant navy and survived only after the U-boat captain that torpedoed his ship came back for him. I never got to hear their stories; I gather they rarely shared them, and after reading other veterans’ accounts I understand why.

My partner has a habit of dropping his pants on the floor, in front of the laundry basket (How To Cohabit). After 15 years, one day I said, “Could you drop them one tiny inch to the left?” He said, “Maybe I should. Now follow me.” He took me to the fridge and pulled out a carton of milk. It had been savaged by a knife when it wouldn’t open and the scissors were missing (again). Beside the incision were the clear instructions, Open Other End.

Come on, Tim Dowling, it is obvious the old dog is in agony with arthritis. As a fellow sufferer, I feel sorry for her. Take her to the vet.
