What a life, and what a singular, unique character David Hockney is. An incredible individualist from the start, and such a wide-ranging artist, excellent portraitist, and all-around extraordinary person.

The uplifting My Old Man brought back memories of my older dad (55 when I was born). Yes, I was sometimes embarrassed, but he was a warm dad with infinite patience. Having been born in 1905, he was also a link with what to me, growing up in the 60s, was an unimaginable past.

Age is irrelevant, it’s attitude that counts. Dad was 50 when I was born, and he lives life to the full and is one of the most liberal people I know.

I really enjoyed Nobody Puts Hadley In The Corner, though, having been a teen in the 80s, I think we should be wary of judging some of the moral narratives from the safety of our more enlightened times. Teaching “character building” completely misses the target. Character is largely formed through relationships with parents. Children need affection, encouragement and appropriate boundaries at home; parents who are disinterested or overly punitive (often because they were treated that way) are more likely to raise kids with emotional, mental health or behavioural problems.

Educational psychologist Dr Laura Warren helps children “become better humans”. Alfie hurt Lucas by saying his creation was rubbish; Lucas knows Alfie said it hoping he’d be upset. Warren encourages him not to play with Alfie until he learns better. Sounds good to me. When can she start on Prime Minister’s Questions?

I Am A Jedi not only gave me my first laugh since the election results, but also some reassurance that the UK can’t be such a bad place if Kevin Cottam can live in peace and harmony.

Please could Zoe Williams continue to review cars that are gas-guzzling, over-priced fantasies. It’s called aspiration, you miseries (Your View, passim). No wonder Labour lost.

I felt sorry for Cherie Blair when she was woken by the press the morning after election day in May 1997. But I felt even more sorry for Justine Miliband when she was not woken by the press the morning after election day in May 2015.
