No deal

“In the era where the US Defence Secretary is hinting that he has plans to take Greenland by force, are we really sure that we want to commit to AUKUS? And what would that commitment mean for the US if it can be ’reviewed’ at any time, by any administration? Keep the US an ally, but let’s not be a vassal state.”

Alex Craig

Friends elsewhere

“AUKUS came at the expense of a submarine contract with France, the cancellation of which gave us nothing for a whole lot of money. With the US no longer a reliable ally under Trump, we should be sending a clear message that we won’t compromise or bargain on the deal, or scrap it.”

Leigh Scott

Capital gains for public transport

“Housing affordability cannot simply be addressed by reducing regulation to facilitate more development. We should also look at increasing windfall gain taxes, like capital gains, so that governments can finance the public transport infrastructure necessary to support greater density by recovering some of the windfall gains that flow to landowners from the up-zonings that infrastructure enables.”

Not a single email from you in support of AUKUS

“The sooner we get out of AUKUS the better. $368 billion would be much better spent here on health, housing and more.”

Dr Robin Gibson

“The friendship between Australia and the US has always been costly, but with Trump at the helm, it’s clearly become unaffordable. The time has come to step up in our own neighbourhood.”

Denise Martin

“By the time we get the AUKUS subs (if we get them at all), our supposed aggressors could be sipping gin and tonic atop their aircraft carriers and waiting for our delayed response.”

Rosalind Drake

“I have yet to hear a clear argument for why AUKUS is in Australia’s interests. We have a very big country to protect here and now given the world circumstances.”

Jocelyn O'Neill

“If the US reneges on the AUKUS agreement, does Australia get its money back? If not, we should withhold our critical minerals.”

Gordon Payne, South Fremantle WA

“It’s extremely costly and there’s a lot of well informed discussion as to the possibility that no subs will ever be delivered.”

John Courcier, Coffs Harbour NSW
