Your Party relaunch membership platform after 'defamation' row

JEREMY Corbyn’s new party has announced it is officially taking on members – after the first membership launch threatened to throw the project into disarray.

Your Party, the vehicle by which the former Labour leader hopes to use to set up a new left-wing party, is taking on members in what is its second attempt to allow people to official affiliate to the project.

The first was launched by co-founder Zarah Sultana in what was later described as an “unauthorised” move by Corbyn and his faction, which comprises the four Independent Alliance MPs.

He referred the matter to the Information Commissioner’s Office and Sultana (below) hit back claiming that the party was being controlled by a “sexist boy’s club” and threatening to sue.

She later dropped the legal threat and has said she hopes to reconcile with Corbyn.

The status of those who signed up and paid dues through Sultana’s platform is unclear and both her and Corbyn’s teams have been approached for comment.

Your Party have said on social media that those who signed up last week under Sultana's platform are officially members and need to take no further action.

In a post on Twitter/X, Your Party said: "For those who joined under the previous system last week, please be assured your data and membership is secure and will be migrated across. There is nothing more for you to do at this stage."

A number of supporters have expressed confusion over their status.

Author Richard Seymour tweeted: "Are the 20,000, including me, who signed up last week still members? Or must we sign up again? If the former, they must walk back the 'phishing scam' nonsense. If the latter, they will willingly shed members and momentum and money."

Glaswegian activist Jim Monaghan added: "I joined last week. I can't join again until I hear what has happened to my money. No answer to requests [regarding] a refund. I won't be sending any more money while this is unresolved."

The latest membership offer begins at a £5 standard rate per month and entitles members to voting rights, through a one-member-one-vote system.

It also makes members eligible to be selected through sortition – the model used for forming juries – for participation in the as-yet unnamed party’s founding conference, which it has now been announced will take place at the ACC in Liverpool on November 29 and 30.

Your Party has emailed some 750,000 people who have signed up for updates on the project the details of membership and said it expects 13,000 members to be selected for participation in the founding conference. They will debate the party’s structure and political programme and this will then be put to all members for a vote.

Before the conference, documents covering the party’s structures and programme will be published and members will be invited to discuss these online before they are debated at “a series of mass regional assemblies across Britain”.

An online vote of members will also be held prior to the conference to determine the party’s permanent name.

A Your Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Government is failing the British people. It promised change, then delivered more of the same bought and failed politics: more freebies, more cuts, more corporate subsidies.

“Your Party represents a real alternative: a party run by and for its members, not for billionaires and their client politicians.

“To the millions of people who are fed up with business as usual, who believe in public ownership, fair taxation of wealth and opposition to genocide, our message is simple: this is Your Party, get involved.”

In a video message on Twitter/X, Corbyn acknowledged the difficulties the party has faced in recent weeks.

He said: “We’ve had some fraught days in the last week, as you will no doubt be very aware. And to be honest, we haven’t covered ourselves in glory.

“But what is most important is this: we all agree about the plans for the conference and the road map to get to it. Before all the commotion last week the plans themselves were warmly welcomed right across our movement.

“People desperately want the chance for a real alternative to poverty, war and injustice. So let’s get on with it.”

Corbyn and Sultana were due to speak at an event in London on Tuesday to promote a peace conference in Paris next month but it is understood Sultana cancelled just before it was due to start.

Asked by The National if he understood the disappointment and frustration of members at the warring at the top of the party, Corbyn said: "Yes, there’s been some hiccups. Yes, there’s been some social media storms. But you know what? People get too obsessed with that."
