Your Party branches issue update after Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana rift

BRANCHES of the temporarily-named Your Party have responded after an internal rift between Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana broke out on Thursday.

The party’s official Twitter/X account released a statement on Thursday evening, saying that an unauthorised email sent to supporters had been reported to the Information Commissioner.

The statement read: “A false membership system has been unilaterally launched, data collected and payments taken. Yourparty.uk has responsibilities to our supporters and duty under the law.

“These developments are a blow for everyone who has put their hope in a real alternative. Following Zarah Sultana ’s unilateral announcement of the launch of a new party on July 3, an agreement was reached for the Independent Alliance MPs to kickstart the founding process and deliver an open, democratic conference to found a new party.

“Zarah signed up to this process and was welcomed into the Independent Alliance. She has not been excluded from any discussions – and everyone involved has been committed to a process rooted in inclusivity and mutual respect.”

Corbyn said he was "seeking legal advice" following the "unauthorised" sending of the sign-up email.

It comes after Sultana accused the group of running a “sexist boys’ club” which sidelined her, claiming she set up the portal – through which an estimated 20,000 people signed up to a direct debit subscription – to keep grassroots supporters engaged.

She named Karie Murphy and her associates in her statement as having “sole financial control of members’ money and sole constitutional control over our conference”.

In response, Your Party said in the statement: “As to allegations made against a named individual, Karie Murphy is a trusted and dedicated volunteer.

“She has never had access to or control of any funds, which are held exclusively for the party. Neither have the other five Independent Alliance MPs had access too, or control over, any funds at any stage.”

The Glasgow branch of the party issued a statement , urging Sultana, Corbyn and the rest of the MPs involved not to “wash your linen in public”.

“The excitement of this morning’s opening of Your Party’s membership has already given way to gossip and rumour of infighting among the MPs, and many are worried about the impact this will have on the launch of Your Party”, the statement read.

“Fortunately, Your Party doesn’t belong to the MPs: It belongs to all of us. The events of today are exactly why grassroots power is what the country needs.

“The volunteers who have been organising Your Party Glasgow gatherings will continue out work at the community-level to build on the hope and excitement that fills the air across Scotland and Britain for a radically new and just society.

“When this is resolved or things have evolved we hope there will be greater transparency on structure and decision-making going forward.

“For now, we will focus on the task at hand and our existing planned activities and hope that you will continue to join us.”

The Edinburgh branch issued a similar statement , recommending individuals still use the contested link to become a party member but added: “You can still join our organising without doing so until this is resolved.”
