XR banned from continuing protests in London

Police have ordered an early end to Extinction Rebellion’s two-week protest in London as officers last night worked to clear activists from the capital.

The climate change demonstrators were told to leave Trafalgar Square, where many have congregated lawfully since Monday last week.

Activists had targeted the City of London yesterday for the start of the second week of planned demonstrations which have caused mayhem in the capital.

Scotland Yard said any assembly linked to the group's so-called Autumn Uprising "must now cease their protests".

Organisers said the force were using “draconian measures” and “not very clear bases” to tell activists they no longer have the right to protest.

PM in race against time to secure Brexit deal

Boris Johnson is in a race against time to secure a Brexit deal before a crucial summit with EU leaders later this week.

The Prime Minister was warned by Finland's leader Antti Rinne that there was "no time" to reach an agreement before the meeting, which starts on Thursday.

But Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick rejected the remarks, stressing a "great deal" of progress had been made and negotiators are working "very intensively".

Negotiators are stepping up efforts to work out a way to break the deadlock over the Irish backstop ahead of the Halloween deadline.

US troops redeployed to 'monitor situation' in Syria

Donald Trump has said US troops he ordered to leave Syria will remain in the Middle East to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State threat.

The president made clear that the withdrawing troops will leave Syria entirely but confirmed they would be redeployed and remain in the region.

Mr Trump also confirmed he will soon sign an executive order permitting sanctions to be imposed on current and former Turkish officials.

Sterling calls out Bulgaria coach after England win marred by racist chanting

Raheem Sterling has called out Bulgaria coach Krasimir Balakov after England's win in Sofia was marred by racist chanting from the home crowd.

The build-up to the match had been dominated by concerns over possible racist abuse in the Vasil Levski National Stadium.

England's concerns proved correct as Gareth Southgate's team were subjected to sickening racist abuse from sections of Bulgaria supporters in the stands.

Sterling took to Twitter to retweet a news article in which Balakov accused England of having a bigger racism problem than his own country.

The Man City forward commented: "Not sure about this one chief."

Sterling was on the scoresheet for the 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win.

Booker Prize judges flout rules as two authors split award

The 2019 Booker Prize has been split between Margaret Atwood for The Testaments and Bernardine Evaristo for Girl, Woman, Other.

Judges of the prestigious award, which comes with a £50,000 prize and literary acclaim, "explicitly flouted" the rules by declaring a tie.

The two authors will split the prize money.
