Your hair straighteners have an expiry date and there's a way of working it out

As far as surprising bits of information go, this is up there with the best of them.

Did you know your hair straighteners have an expiry date?

Now it's not just food that your forgot about in the back of the fridge you need to think about it, its your trusty hair styling tools too.

But in all seriousness, it's a pretty important issue as if they have passed their use by date, they could cause damage to your hair.

However, to make things a little more complicated, they're not actually stamped with a date, the Mirror reports.

So, without an actual date, how do you know?

Obvious signs that your hair straighteners are past their best is damaged plates.

Have you checked the condition of your straighteners recently? (PA Photo/thinkstockphotos)

Expert hair stylist Fabio Scalia explained to  Marie Claire  that this can result in your lock being exposed to extreme heat, which in turn burns, breaks and strips your hair of the natural oils it needs.

Not what we want for our tresses.

Even if your plates still look fine, then it's also worth taking a look at the heat indicator light.

But if you think yours still look fine, it's also worth taking a look at the heat indicator light.

"The indicator will also tell you when it's time to start hunting for a new one," says Scalia.

"If the light blinks often while in use, your iron has stopped holding heat and is on its way out."

Another telltale way to signal that you need to spend some cash on a new pair is if you find you have to go over the same section of hair over and over again.

And let's be honest, nobody has time for that when you're in a rush for work or meeting friends of an evening.
