Tucked away in a portal on the Pennsylvania state website is a treasure trove of annual ethics disclosures that offer a glimpse into what politicians are doing when they’re not governing.
It was by reviewing those financial interest statements that Capital & Main learned that Republican state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who is facing off against Gov. Josh Shapiro for the state’s highest office in the fall, leases land to two natural gas companies, and has been making money off of it for years. That raises ethical questions about a candidate who has vowed to “fast-track permits for natural gas production” if elected.
In the Keystone State, legislators are required to file forms every year reporting side income that surpasses $1,300; gifts they’ve accepted; creditors they owe money to; and more. Most other states have similar laws, and these disclosures could be a minefield for discovery.
