Younis makes Yorkshire claim

After shocking the press with an unqualified refusal to take over the Pakistan captaincy in Inzamam-ul-Haq's absence, Younis Khan today claimed he has agreed to captain Yorkshire next season.

Yorkshire have been looking for a suitable replacement for Darren Lehmann, and chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed today that they have been in discussions with Younis, along with a handful of others.

Regan refused to confirm claims that Younis had been offered the post, but seemed pleased with the development.

"We are in discussions with a number of overseas players, one of whom is Younis Khan," said Regan. "Nothing has been finalised at this stage but we hope to be able to make an announcement next week. But if he has put it out there, it is quite encouraging from our point of view."

Younis had earlier claimed: "The great English county team Yorkshire have made me an offer to be their captain for next season. Yorkshire have great traditions, and I will be finding out as much about their history as I can before I go there.

"They first contacted me through Ramiz Raja when I was at Cardiff while playing for Pakistan in the first one-day international against England. The talks have been ongoing since then, and I am pleased to say that I have agreed their terms and conditions. I hope the contract will be completed next week."
