The memory of former Bishopton star Matthew Seymour lives on as kids as young as five picked up a ball at his annual event.
Bishopton Rugby Club held their Matthew’s Day event on Monday in memory of their former senior player, who tragically passed away in 2014 through an undiagnosed cardiac condition at the age of just 21.
Despite the freezing cold conditions more than 50 players descended on the club’s Holm Park to take part in touch rugby matches, with some youngsters getting their first taste of the sport.
A Bishopton Rugby Club spokesperson said: “Matthew’s Day brings the whole club together to play non-contact touch rugby, with teams made up from every section of the club with players ranging from five all the way up to 60 years old.
“Over 50 players, split evenly into four teams, took part in the games with lots of tries, smiles and laughter for the full two hours.”
Bishopton Rugby Club have expanded significantly over the last year, despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic
The club now have two new teams and as such erected two new sets of goalposts on the day, to allow them to develop a second pitch at Holm Park.
The spokesperson added: “This season Bishopton Rugby have added two new sections to our ever growing club.
“We now have touch rugby and over-35 male player sections established, on top of our P1-3’s. P4-7’s (mixed), P4-S2 girls, boys under-13’s and under-15’s and our adult male and ladies teams.
“This growth has meant we had to add a second pitch to our ground, with some of the players from the over 35’s helping to raise the goalposts on Monday.
“These will now be used in the new year which is a huge step forward for the club as a whole.”
