Youngsters set fire to popular park bandstand as they burnt their exam papers and school books

A group of youngsters set fire to a bandstand in a popular Bolton park as they burnt their exam papers and school books.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Queen's Park at 1pm on Friday afternoon.

Police officers attended but no arrests have currently been made.

An eyewitness from the scene said she saw a group of around 10 teenagers 'setting fire to their school books'.

The onlooker saw the performance bandstand in the park become engulfed in smoke as it was caught in the blaze.

The incident come as thousands of youngsters across the borough are celebrating the end of their GCSE and A-Level exams.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "We were called at 12.57pm to a report of criminal damage involving youngsters setting fire to exam papers and booklets.

"The fire has burnt through a wooden bandstand.

"Fire have attended and put it out.

"No arrests have been made at this current time."

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that a crew from Bolton Central attended the incident.

A spokesperson said crews were trying to gain access to the area underneath the bandstand.

The park's electricity supply has been switched off.

The 22-acre park just north of the town centre is popular with children and families, with a playground, café and sand pit.
