Young woman rushed to hospital after horror crash on M8 in North Cork

A young woman was taken to hospital following a crash in North Cork yesterday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on the M8 between Fermoy and Michelstown after a car flipped over while travelling northbound around 3pm.

The road was temporarily closed both ways as two county fire units attended the scene along with an air ambulance.

The woman, 20s, was taken to Cork University Hospital "as a precaution" and the road has now reopened.

A garda spokesman said: "Earlier today, emergency services responded to a single-vehicle collision on the M8 motorway, Northbound between Junctions 14 and 13.

"Gardaí from Fermoy District attended the scene with Mitchelstown and Fermoy units of Cork County Fire Service and the Community Air Ambulance.

"As luck would have it, three doctors arrived onto the scene of the collision, so the lone occupant of the car received the best help anyone could wish for.

"The driver who was wearing a seatbelt was examined at the scene and walked away uninjured, but was taken to hospital for assessment.

"Remember to adjust your driving according to the conditions around you. Rain and hail can turn driving conditions hazardous in seconds. Keep your distance, mind your speed and always wear your seatbelt."
