A young woman has died after being struck by a car as it fled police in the Brixton area of London.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the collision took place at 9.45pm on Wednesday after officers had signalled for a car to stop on Brixton Hill and it failed to do so.
After then hitting the pedestrian, understood to be aged 20, it sped off without stopping and the vehicle was later found abandoned nearby.
Police are in the process of informing the victim's next of kin and the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.
Photos from the scene show a tent erected outside a bus stop near a Nisa Local where it is understood the car struck the woman.
In a statement, a Met spokesperson said: “Police signalled for a car to stop and it failed to do so. The car sped off from police and was then involved in a collision with a pedestrian at approximately 21:45hrs on Wednesday 19 February on Brixton Hill.
“The car did not stop at the scene. The car was found abandoned nearby and enquiries are ongoing to trace the occupants.

“Officers are in the process of informing all her next of kin.
“The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine.”
Buses in the area were apparently all stationary with their lights off, following the incident, according to someone at the scene.
