Young woman dies and two others injured after car crashes into ditch in Mayo as gardai close road

A young woman has died and two other people have been injured after a horror crash in Mayo.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Corlough West in Belmullet on Friday around 9.15pm.

A car had left the road and collided with a ditch.

The driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman, was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. Her body has been removed to the mortuary in Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.

Two passengers, a man and woman both aged in their early 20s, were injured. They were taken to be treated at Mayo University Hospital, where their injuries are described as non-life threatening.

The road is currently closed for a forensic collision investigation and local diversions are in place.

Gardai have issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai in Belmullet are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Corlough West, Belmullet, Co. Mayo. last night Friday 28th January, 2023 at approximately 9.15p.m.

“A female driver, 22 years, was fatally injured when the car she was driving left the road and collided with a ditch. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body has been removed to the mortuary in Mayo University Hospital where a post mortem will take place in due course. Two passengers (both early 20s) in the car at the time of the collision, a male and female, were removed to Mayo University Hospital to be treated with non-life threatening injuries.

“The road is currently closed and local diversions are in place. Garda Forensic Collision investigators will conduct their examination of the scene this morning, Saturday 28th January, 2023.

“Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to them.”
