Young woman claims she was ejected from a taxi after the driver 'refused to put the meter on'

A young woman claims she was told to get out of a taxi after the driver demanded payment up front.

Demi Davies, from Port Talbot , had been on a night out in Swansea's Wind Street on Saturday with her cousin and a friend when they decided to get into a taxi to make their way home.

The 22-year-old, who studies law at Cardiff University, got into one of the taxis at the rank in Caer Street, but claimed the driver "refused" to put the meter on and "demanded £35 up front".

Miss Davies said: "We were only out for about half an hour as the weather was terrible so we weren't drunk.

"We wanted a taxi on the way home so we got in and said we wanted to go by McDonald's in Baglan .

She claimed: "He demanded money up front and said £35 but it never costs that much. We said to him 'we'll give you £20 or £25 up front and if you turn the meter on and it costs any more we'll give it to you'.

"He then became really aggressive and said 'you give it or you get out' so we knew that we had to leave.

"My cousin was really frightened."

The 22-year-old claimed she asked the driver for his licence number as "his badge was not on show" but he refused.

"We got out near the taxi rank and he drove off," Miss Davies claimed.

"I spoke to a taxi firm and they checked the tariff and they said it would have cost around £17 so he was trying to charge us double," she claimed.

"We managed to get another taxi and told him what had happened and he got us home safely.

"It cost us £20 and we gave a £5 tip.

"What I'm concerned about is the vulnerable people getting taxis.

She claimed she felt "very intimidated" by him and it was "quite scary."

Swansea Council confirmed it was "aware of the complaints and is looking into it".

It is understood that the taxi driver is self-employed.

Another taxi driver, who has operated throughout Swansea for the last 16 years, but did not want to be named, said he was aware of similar incidents involving the same driver.

He claimed: "I picked up some girls from Swansea one weekend to take them home and they said that the weekend before this driver had stopped in a country lane and demanded that they got out.

"Apparently they had paid him £60 up front to get to Ferryside and he demanded more," he claimed.

He said any driver who refused to put the meter on should have their licence immediately revoked.

"The public need to be made aware and should take photos before they get in the car and if they're not sure they should get out."
