Young woman charged over serious assault after being 'advised' to wear face covering

A young woman has been arrested over a serious assault after being "advised" to wear a face covering.

The incident happened in Sligo town at around 6.45pm on Saturday.

The woman in her early 20s entered the premises and was "advised" of her failure to wear the required face covering.

She left the scene but returned shortly after and allegedly assaulted a female member of staff a number of times with what gardai described as an "implement".

The woman then fled the scene on foot.

The injured member of staff was taken to Sligo University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The woman presented herself voluntarily at Sligo Garda Station where she was arrested by gardai. She was then detained at Ballymote Garda Station.

A garda spokesman said: "She has since been charged and will appear before Sligo District Court on Thursday, 21st January, 2021."
