Young woman, 20s, killed after horror three-car crash in Co Cavan as gardai close road


A woman has died and two others have been injured after a three-car road collision in Co Cavan.

The incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday morning at around 5.20am at Derrygarra Lower in Butlersbridge, Co Cavan.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene but one woman, who was in her 20s, was pronounced dead.

Two other women, aged in their 30s and 50s, were taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment.

Their injuries are understood to be non-life-threatening.

Gardai have closed the road to facilitate a technical examination and diversions are in place.

They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Cavan are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision this morning, Wednesday 2nd March 2022.

"At approximately 5:20am Gardaí were altered to a three car collision that occurred at Derrygarra Lower, Butlersbridge.

"A woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other women, one aged in her 30s and the other in her 50s were taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for their injuries, which are understood to be non-life threatening.

"The road is currently closed to allow for a technical examination to take place by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 436 8800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
