Young West Lothian footballers unveil club's new defibrillator

A piece of new life-saving equipment has been unveiled at a West Lothian community football club.

The defibrillator is now available at the Charlie Dyet Pavilion at King George V Park, home of Whitburn FCA’s Kids’ teams.

The club’s teams got together to raise the money before lockdown and were delighted to have the equipment installed.

Secretary John Murphy explained: “The money itself was raised by our member teams; they all donated individually to it.

“Within Whitburn FCA there are 14 or 15 teams and there’s also Whitburn Jnrs and a couple of amateur teams and we raised the money last year. But with covid striking, we didn’t do anything with it as there was no urgency.

“But what brought it to everybody’s minds was Christian Eriksen collapsing on the field and them using a defibrillator on him.

“That made us think we ought to get it done and that was the push really to get it installed.” Charlie said altogether, the teams raised and incredible £1450, adding: “Each team agreed it was something we ought to have and that each team would contribute.

“It’s such a worthwhile piece of equipment and we’ve now prompted Whitburn Juniors to put one in as well. They’ve applied and we’ll get one in there shortly.

“We hope we never have to use it, but it’s like having an insurance policy. You get it for peace of mind, hoping to never have to put a claim in.”
