Police investigating the death of a 22-year-old waitress found at her house in Hang Dong district of Chiang Mai have arrested her cousin's boyfriend.

Her body was found by her employer on Saturday, after she failed to turn up for work on Friday.

Police were called to a house in tambon Nam Phrae about 4pm on Saturday. The body of the waitress, identified only as Yupa aka Praew, was on the bed. She was dressed in blue pyjamas, with the pants pulled down below her knees.

Police assumed the woman died on Friday.

On Sunday police arrested a man, 31, whose girlfriend is a cousin of the dead woman. Police said they stayed at the same house. The man, who was an orchard worker, was drunk and used the electrical cord of a hair straightener to strangle the woman and planned to rape her but the woman was menstruating.

Police identified the murderer because a deliveryman arrived at the house just when the murderer was about to flee the place on Friday.

On Saturday the man returned to the house and pretended to be a witness when police examined the crime scene.
