Young Tipperary girl who collected every GAA jersey in Ireland declared cancer-free

A nine-year-old girl from Tipperary who set herself a goal of collecting every GAA jersey in Ireland while battling leukaemia has gotten the wonderful news that she is cancer-free.

Róisín Price had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) in February 2015.

And when she got the news of its return last year, she set herself a challenge of collecting GAA jerseys from every county in the country.

Thousands of people responded from across the country and even internationally - including signed jerseys, specially-designed cakes and toys.

Newstalk tech reporter Jess Kelly played a major part in that having initially given the call to action for the young girl.

In the end, Roisín received well over her target of every jersey in Ireland - and Kelly tweeted a video yesterday confirming some wonderful news.

In an update, her mother wrote: “After a long three weeks waiting for results, we found out this morning that Róisín has no detectable Leukaemia cells.

“She is in remission and cancer-free. For now, the plan is to continue monitoring closely and have bone marrow samples taken every month for six months.

“Words cannot describe how we feel. It is such a relief to get great news

“Róisín continues to show how strong and brave she is and I am in awe of her. Her determination cannot be matched. She is an inspiration to me and everyone.”

Jerseys that were sent to Róisín included: signed Meath and Kilkenny jerseys; one signed by the historic Tipperary team that won the Munster title last season; and a Dublin jersey donated and signed by Bernard Brogan.

A GoFundMe page, 'Roisin's Relentless Fight', has been set up by Róisín's family to help raise money for her treatment.

More than €20,000 has been donated to the campaign so far.
