Young Scots wrestler has US debut put on hold due to coronavirus outbreak

A young Scots wrestler in the US has had his career put on hold by the coronavirus - just before he was due to make his debut.

Samuel Wilson, 20, who fights under the name Leo King, is watching brawls in supermarkets in Florida instead of getting in the squared circle.

The up-and-coming grappler, from Findhorn, Aberdeenshire, moved to the states at the end of last year after making a name on the Scottish scene.

He is aiming one day work with the big-league WWE and is now part of the AEW which boasts big names in the sport.

But with his debut due on March 15, Covid-19 swept the world and put many countries on lockdown.

Speaking from Florida, Samuel said: "We were getting ready for my American debut for March 15th but a week before it happened we obviously had the whole corona outbreak - which cancelled that show.

"And then more shows kept getting cancelled and then promotions had to start shutting down business so I never managed to get my debut.

"The restrictions aren’t as bad as the UK but are growing- we’ve just introduced the curfew from midnight till 6am and anyone caught outside after that time is asked to go home and fined.

"Everyone is also panic buying and it’s getting out of hand, I witnessed Walmarts fights as it was like the videos you see of Black Friday online.

"The wrestling scene as well  as training has shut down until further notice so we don’t know how long it’ll last out here but most wrestlers are training at home or are keeping busy with studying.

"I’m doing the same as I don’t want to return to the ring and be completely out of shape. Most of us are doing challenges online like action shot challenge or mid flight challenges and tagging others to join in."

But despite the current lockdown, Samuel says he still has the fight to get to the top of the game.

He added": "I think AEW are a completely different way of wrestling...it’s really a great time to be a wrestler."
