Young Scots woman dies after being hit by car while walking on country road

A young woman has tragically died after being knocked down by a car during a late night collision near Caldercruix in Lanarkshire.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A89 Airdrie Road, near the Woodside Road junction, at around 11.45pm on Sunday, May 16.

A 22-year-old pedestrian was sadly pronounced dead at the scene while police closed down the road for a full accident investigation.

Officers remain at the scene as their enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision remain ongoing.

Investigators are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the crash or those who saw the woman walking shortly before.

Detective Constable Lyndsay McKinnon, of Coatbridge CID, said: “This was a serious incident and our thoughts at this time are with the family and friends of the woman who lost her life.

“Our enquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing and I would ask anyone who saw what happened, and has not yet spoken to officers, to come forward.

“We are particularly interested to speak to anyone who was on the A89 before the crash, and may have seen the deceased walking.

“Anyone with information or anyone who may dashcam footage which can help the investigation is asked to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 4229 of 16 May.”
