Young Scots politician in bid to find homeless man a job after gran's death left him on streets

A budding politician has launched a bid to find a young homeless man a job after meeting him on the streets of Glasgow.

Kayla Gardner, who is a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Airdrie and Shotts constituency, came across the 21-year-old yesterday.

She learned that the recent death of the man's gran, who brought him up, had left him without shelter and living on the streets for nearly a month.

After being forced to leave the army cadets due to mental health reasons, he had been left jobless.

In response, Kayla decided to try her best to help him get back on his feet.

Providing him with food and accommodation for the night on Tuesday, Kayla took to Twitter to ask for help in securing the man employment.

She has now joined him on the job hunt and is seeking out opportunities in and around the city.

Kayla said: "Today in Glasgow, I met a young homeless man, he has been on the streets for over 3 weeks.

"We bought him dinner and accommodation for the night, he goes into supported accommodation tomorrow. We’re meeting up with him again at some point and help him find a job.

"If anyone knows anyone/anywhere that is hiring, please get in touch!!"

Returning the next day to help the rough-sleeper, Kayla updated social media users on the man's situation, explaining that although he was promised supported accommodation today, there was no space.

He has since been advised that accommodation will be in place for him tomorrow.

She continued: "He has no addictions, his gran brought him up and his gran passed, so he had to come out of the army cadets due to mental health.

"He was told he would have his supported accommodation today but there’s no space.

"He’s been promised that supported accommodation will be ready tomorrow."

Extending her gesture of goodwill, she continued: "He only has 3 pair of trackies, 2 jumpers and a jacket and a pair of shoes so I’m going to do an appeal for clothes.

"If anyone has any mens M size clothing/ mens 10 shoes please get in touch!!"

The MSYP's calls have grown arms and legs, with her initial tweet receiving over 300 retweets and 1,000 likes - with some offering help and support.

One user replied: "From a guy who was homeless for 8 months in his 30s, I salute you kayla, its all to easy just to go missing on the streets, and the most of the dwp treat you like trash, I was very lucky, I got help too, you have my admiration young lady".
