Young Scots will be restricted from renting entire properties on Airbnb as the firm tries to clamp down on house parties.
Anyone under the age of 25 with less than three positive ratings will be banned from renting entire listings close to where they live.
Under-25s will still be free to book private and hotel rooms through Airbnb, regardless of where they live.
Anyone with more than three positive reviews and no negative reviews on the platform, or who have long term plans will not be subject to restrictions.
Airbnb says that it hopes to “protect local communities" with its decision.
The ban will come as part of a trial and will be extended to France, Spain and the rest of the UK.
News of the restrictions come a day after Nicola Sturgeon warned Scots not to throw house parties amid a growing number of social media images showing people flouting the rules indoors.
The First Minister said that data gathered by health experts points to large indoor gatherings being a problem in the fight against Covid-19.
Patrick Robinson, Airbnb’s director of public policy, said: “We want everyone to enjoy the summer safely and while the overwhelming majority of guests on our platform are responsible neighbours, we are absolutely determined to obstruct and weed-out anyone intent on causing antisocial behaviour.
“We want to do everything we can to be good partners to the communities where hosts live and we hope that our new restriction will make it abundantly clear that there is no home for any unauthorised parties on Airbnb.”
