Young rugby player stretchered off at The Gnoll after a nail pierced his boot on the pitch

A young rugby player was stretchered off the pitch after a nail pierced his boot.

Louis Rees of Llandovery  College ran out for the start of the match against Neath Port Talbot College at The Gnoll in Neath yesterday when a nail pierced his boot and injured his foot.

Paramedics who were on hand for the game immediately rushed to his aid, and he was treated in the centre of the pitch before being stretchered off.

Players from each team then lined up across the pitch and scanned its length to see if there was any more.

Despite the fact there was nothing else discovered, a decision was made to move the WRU National Schools and Colleges League match to Llandarcy on player safety grounds, following an initial consideration to postpone the game.

Thankfully, Louis's injuries were not as severe as initially feared.

The nail pierced the side of his foot, and he was able to participate in the game after being treated.

And amazingly, he even went on to score four tries in the game which finished with a 33-57, with Llandovery prevailing as the victors.

An eyewitness said: "There was concern that there would be a more serious injury if the game went ahead and there was another one somewhere.

"There was a worry that something else could happen in the middle of the game."

Llandovery College declined to comment. WalesOnline has approached Neath Port Talbot College for comment.
