Young racer's dreams of following Mark Webber aided by Canberra track extension

Sebastian Ruiz has wanted to be like Mark Webber since he first saw him on TV.

Sebastian Ruiz says he has "always been fast".

Since getting into a go-kart when he was four years old he has been obsessed with finding ways to go that little bit quicker than anyone else.

"I've always loved speed," the 11-year-old said.

"At school my best friend and I always race to get first in line. We normally push each other over.

"I just like the sensation of winning and going fast."

Ruiz is one of the brightest young stars in Australian kart racing and now his local track will be similarly world-class.

The ACT Government is pumping $200,000 into Circuit Mark Webber in Pialligo, extending it from 750 metres to 1.1 kilometres.

That brings the track, named after Queanbeyan's favourite son, in line with international standards.

"I'm confident that I've got a few more stars like Mark Webber," Canberra Kart Racing president Michelle Livanes said.

Webber got his start in karting before going on to win nine Formula One grands prix and was an inspiration to 11-year-old Ruiz.

"Definitely, I've always wanted to race F1," he said.

"Ever since I first saw Mark Webber … on TV winning, I just always wanted to be up there with him."

While Government officials and those who run the track are thrilled about the prospect of Circuit Mark Webber's extension attracting international visitors, for Ruiz it is really just more space to help him sate his need for speed.
