Young racer Blair Smith is on the right track to success

Blair Smith hopes to follow in the footsteps of his idol Sebastian Vettel after winning the Scottish karting championship at the first attempt.

The eight-year-old took the crown at West of Scotland Kart Club in Larkhall earlier this month, was seventh in the British Championships, and has also done well in the British Karting Super One Series.

Mum Lisa, from Stonehouse, says Blair is a natural and it’s all he’s ever wanted to do.

She said: “Blair has always loved cars, since he has been able to walk he has been into his cars.

“His idol is Sebastian Vettel, who drives for Ferrari, that’s who he would love to be, so he’s always followed him and said that’s what he wants to do, so I said ‘come on,then’.”

Blair hasn’t been on the track for long and after a lengthy pitstop during lockdown, he made the most of his return to the track.

Lisa added: “He started karting on June 6, 2019, for his seventh birthday, but he didn’t have his first race until September that year, and then we’ve had lockdown.

“Since it was lifted in June he’s competed in the British Championships, the Super One Series and the Scottish Championships.

“He’s only really done big races since June, so from then until nearly the end of October, what he has achieved is absolutely unbelievable.

“We’re over the moon – he has only been driving for a year, but he has blown us all away, totally.”
