Young Priestfield ABC fighters take medals from Scottish Novice Championships

Young boxers from Priestfield Amateur Boxing Club in Blantyre emerged with gold and silver medals from the Scottish Novice Championships at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell last month.

Jay Steele, who was boxing in the 2003 -75kg category, won the middleweight title and the gold medal after beating Leith Victoria boxer William Reid at Tynecastle Stadium in Edinburgh on Friday, November 29.

He had defeated Max Christiannse from Erskine Melville in the semi-finals, and Oliver Baxendale from Rivals Gym in Wishaw in the quarter-finals.

Silver was won by debut boxer Regan Steele, from Larkhall, in the 2006 35.5kg weight category, and who is Jay’s cousin

Regan was narrowly outpointed in the final by experienced boxer Riley Clark from Rob Roy Boxing Club in Glasgow

Coach Tommy Slaven said: “It was another great tournament for us and I was absolutely delighted with both boxers and their application.

“It was very much a family affair as one of our coaches, Philip Steele, is not only Regan’s dad but also Jay’s uncle.

“The boxing club only moved into our new premises just over 12 months ago, located in the Village area of Blantyre, and we are bursting at the seams every night.

“There are a lot of good prospects coming through, and we are really looking forward to the remainder of the season.”
