'Young player is most important': Jets cancel training after COVID case

NEWCASTLE Jets have cancelled all academy training in the wake of a youth player's positive coronavirus test.

The club said no training would go ahead this week and the weekend's game would be reviewed pending advice from Football NSW and NSW Health.

The case was confirmed on Wednesday night and health authorities said they were still working to determine the source of infection.

"The decision to cancel training was made by the club, taken as a precaution to our players and staff while contract tracing is undertaken," Newcastle Jets said in a statement.

"The player did not attend academy training at Hunter Sports High School while infectious."

Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna thanked health authorities for their work and said the clubs focus was on the player's welfare.

"The most important person in this situation is our young player with the virus, and we wish him all the best," Mr McKinna said.

"There are no concerns regarding any contact with our Hyundai A-League squad given the competition's strict biosecurity reguluations, and our upcoming clash with Wellington Phoenix has not been impacted."

In an email update, Hunter Sports High School principal Rachel Byrne advised players in the team who attend the school would be in self-isolation for 14 days in line with heath advice.

"Advice from NSW Public Health is that other than the players/coach/manager who were part of the U15 boys team on [August 1] there is no requirement for self- isolation and players and parents are able to attend school and work as they usually would, there is also no requirement for anyone outside of the U15 team to be COVID tested unless you are displaying any symptoms, however if you wish to do so please do," she wrote.
