Young people return home for summertime coming-of-age ceremony in central Japan

New adults take a photo on Tuesday in Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture, in front of traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses with thatched roofs that are registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Coming-of-age ceremonies are usually held in January, but because Shirakawa gets heavy snowfall of more than one meter at that time, it is difficult for young people who have left the village to attend. The village therefore holds its ceremony during the Bon holiday period.
