Young people held their own 'Boardmasters' in an idyllic Gower woods - here's what was left behind

This is the mess said to have been left behind by young adults who threw a party as an alternative to a high profile festival which was cancelled due to concerns over the weather.

Thousands of people from across the country were due to head to Newquay in Cornwall this week, to attend the Boardmasters festival, featuring headliners Wu-Tang Clan and Florence + The Machine.

But the event was cancelled at the last minute on Wednesday, to the disappointment of more than 50,000 people who were due to attend.

Many took to social media to express their disappointment and suggest impromptu alternatives.

And it seems one of those alternatives was in Swansea , with dozens of young people heading down to Caswell Valley, for a party held on Wednesday night.

The mess left behind after the party prompted dismay on social media, with one claiming it had been planned as ‘a Boardmasters replacement party’ - despite the event's green credentials, with a commitment to being environmentally friendly.

Councillor Will Thomas, whose Newton ward includes the Caswell valley, said: “I have raised this with the police and have asked them to ensure that there are extra patrols in the area over the summer.

“We are also considering tree-mounted CCTV cameras usually used to catch fly-tippers.

“It is a difficult one really because it is so far out of the way, we can ask police to patrol, but they might hide their drinks and people are generally not breaking the law.”

The wooden round house is situated in Bishop’s Wood’s nature trail and is frequently used by children on educational visits.

But it has long been a place where young adults gather for parties, who are often blamed for leaving a mess in their wake.

Following the festival alternative, community-minded local residents visited the site the following morning to remove the rubbish.

And some of those who attended the party were also said to have been heading back to the site in the morning to help in the clear-up.
