A symposium where young people took the lead in discussing the reintegration into society of juvenile offenders and delinquents was held in Tokyo on Saturday.
Participants in the Wakamono Symposium (Youth symposium) included three award recipients in an essay contest co-held by the Japan Criminal Policy Society and The Yomiuri Shimbun. Ren Honda, 19, of Asahikawa Medical University won the top prize.
The three winners presented their essays at the symposium, after which they participated in discussions with young officials of the Justice Ministry and others.
Among the topics discussed was the importance of helping juvenile offenders and delinquents reintegrate into society by having young people of a similar age teach them and talk to them.
The content of the discussions will be introduced at the 14th U.N. Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (Kyoto Congress) to be held in Kyoto April 20-27.
