Young Offenders star PJ Gallagher reveals he will become a grandfather in new series

PJ Gallagher has told of his new role as a grandfather in season two of Young Offenders.

The funnyman, who plays oddball school principal Barry the hit series, revealed filming the upcoming season is under way.

But he hinted his character is in for an eventful turn of events after the bombshell that he was going to become a grandfather.

The 44-year-old Dubliner told TV Now: “We’re filming now, I just got back from Cork last night.

“I’m still playing the school principal Barry, last series left off with me finding out I’m going to be a grandad.

“You can imagine where that goes. You can imagine how continuously I keep hating those two lads.”

Written and directed by Peter Foott, the show follows the adventures of lovable rogues Conor and Jock (Alex Murphy and Chris Walley) as they navigate their teenage years.

But the Clontarf funnyman admitted show bosses keep such a tight lid on the new storyline, that he doesn’t even know what their future holds.

Gallagher, who played a drug dealer in the film version of Young Offenders, said: “They’ve been really safe with the scripts this year. I’ve only seen two this year and I won’t see the rest until I’m back filming next month.”

The seasoned comic and radio host said he has noticed a divide in his fan base, detailing how his new TV role has opened him up to a new audience.

He explained: “Everybody over 30 that recognises me says they know me from the radio or Naked Camera and everybody under 30 goes, ‘Are you that fella from Young Offenders?’

“So there is a real age divide there.”

And despite juggling filming a new RTE series The Big DIY Challenge, as well as the new season of Young Offenders in Cork, Gallagher said he is still enjoying his gig on Classic Hits.

Speaking of his show PJ And Jim in The Morning with Jim McCabe, he said: “I get to get up everyday and talk rubbish to my mate so I’m really enjoying it.”
