Young NI journalists bring the news to TikTok to explain Coronavirus to younger audiences

Young journalists from Northern Ireland are bringing the news to a platform young people can definitely relate to... TikTok.

TikTok videos are huge at the minute with hundreds of thousands of people spending their lockdown days at home creating funny videos, many becoming 'TikTok famous' in a matter of hours.

Now, young people can also learn what's happening in Northern Ireland thanks to journalists Jane Corscadden, Victoria Johnson, Peter Moor and James McCarthy.

The young journalists, who are all MA students at University of Ulster have been creating a series of simple explainer videos bringing the latest updates on Coronavirus to the masses on TikTok and it's gone down a treat.

Having started just a couple of days ago, the video series has now amassed almost 30,000 views.

Peter explained: “Victoria Johnston, Jane Corscadden, James McCarthy and I decided to start up TikToks to help tell local Northern Irish news to a younger audience in less than 60 seconds.

“Victoria’s sister was saying to her that she was confused about the news and wanted to see it in a simpler format which inspired the idea.

"With the university obviously being closed because of Coronavirus, we all have some free time on our hands.

“At the moment, people want to know precise and accurate information about how Covid-19 is affecting them, and we thought that TikTok was the perfect way to provide this.

“The reaction has been brilliant. In only a few days, we’ve had almost 30,000 views on our Ulster Journos hashtag. “We’re getting lots of people asking us questions in the comments for more information. This is then influencing what videos we make in the future."
