Young mum stabbed 10 times and strangled as man appears on murder rap

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a young mother who was stabbed 10 times and strangled.

Charles Jessop, 28, is accused of killing 33-year-old Clare Nash at a flat in Brickfields Avenue, Newmarket, Suffolk, on January 16.

Peter Gair, prosecuting, said Ms Nash's cause of death was "compression of the neck and stab wounds", adding that she was stabbed 10 times.

The defendant, of Bakers Row in Newmarket, spoke only to confirm his name as he appeared before Ipswich Crown Court on Monday.

Jessop, who appeared by video-link from Norwich Prison wearing a grey tracksuit, sat beside a prison officer as he listened to proceedings. He was not asked for a plea.

He is next due to appear in court on March 27 for a plea hearing, with a provisional trial date set for July 13.

Suffolk Police said officers were called to Brickfields Avenue just after 9.30pm. Paramedics also attended but Ms Nash died at the scene.

A tribute on a Go Fund Me Page, which states it was created for people to donate to help Ms Nash's family, described her as a "beloved" mother-of-two whose "life was taken far too soon".

It had raised more than £1,500 by Monday afternoon.
