Young mother given 20 month prison sentence after being caught with cocaine worth £13

A young mother has been sentenced to jail for 20 months after police found £13 worth of cocaine in her home, it has been reported.

Susan Matthews, 30, was stopped by police in the Old Swan area of Liverpool and a search of her home was subsequently carried out.

The Class A drug was found in her home along with text messages in her phone in which she discussed obtaining the substance on behalf of friends by pooling money to get a cheaper rate, Liverpool Crown Court heard. She admitted to the offence.

Despite the sum of the drugs found at her flat totalling an estimated £13, she was charged with supplying Class A drugs and given a 20 month prison sentence. According to The Liverpool Echo Recorder Mark Ainsworth said while sentencing her: “You got drugs to be divided between yourself and your friends. There was financial gain for yourself, you obtained drugs more cheaply than you would have done otherwise.”

He added that it was “always upsetting for a young woman with children to be sent immediately to prison” but said he was unable to suspend the sentence due to the nature of the offence.
