Young mum drowns in lake after 'trying to save her child struggling in water'

A young mum drowned in a lake when trying to save her child who was struggling in the water.

The woman in her 20s was at a lake in Gowna, County Cavan, in Ireland on Wednesday evening - a lake known locally as 'swan lock'.

But Gardai - Irish police - said the women got into difficulty at the lake around 9pm and drowned.

Reports suggest the woman may have got into the water to help her child get to the shore, before getting into difficulty herself, reports RSVP Live.

Various rescue services including the coast guard attended the scene.

The woman's body was recovered from the shoreline by Cavan Fire Services and Civil Defense soon after.

The coroner will now perform a post-mortem examination.

Cavan was the hottest county in Ireland yesterday and local lakes were thronged with families finding relief from the 30 degree heat.

Gardai said: ”On Wednesday, 21st July 2021 shortly before 9.30pm, Gardaí attended at a lake in Gowna, Co Cavan following reports of a drowning incident.

“The body of a woman (late 20s) was recovered near the shore line by Cavan Fire Services and Civil Defence a short time later."

They added: “The Coroner has been notified and the body of the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Navan Hospital for a post-mortem examination”.
