Young man who tragically died in workplace accident in Dublin port named locally

A young man who tragically passed away in an accident at work in Dublin Port has been named locally.

Matthew Grimes, 20, died while working at the port on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services and Gardai rushed to the scene when the alarm was raised but were unable to save the worker whose body was removed to Dublin City morgue, Dublin Live report.s

SIPTU members expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Matthew Grimes and sadly admitted that deaths like his are "not an uncommon occurrence".

SIPTU Transport Division Organiser, Karan O Loughlin said: “Our members wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Matthew Grimes.

"Unfortunately, a tragic death like this is not an uncommon occurrence. Five workers have died, and others have been seriously injured, in various ports around Ireland, including in Dublin Port, since 2018."

She continued: "While the circumstances of this tragedy have yet to be investigated, it highlights once more the potential dangers facing workers in the ports.

"It is now essential that the Government introduces stronger and mandatory safe working standards for all workers in our ports and docks.

"Our thoughts are with the family of this young man who so tragically lost his life in his workplace."

A garda spokeswoman said into the death are ongoing.

She said: "Gardaí in Store Street were alerted to a sudden death at a shipping premises at Dublin Port this afternoon, Saturday 15th May, 2021 at approximately 3.30p.m.

"The man, 20 years was fatally injured at a workplace accident and Gardaí and Emergency services were called to the scene. The body of deceased was removed to Dublin city morgue where a post mortem will take place.

"An examination of the scene has been carried out by Gardaí and enquiries are ongoing.

"The Health and Safety Authority and the local Coroner have been notified."
