Young man seriously injured as road closed, 'area searched and four flee scene' in horror hit and run on North Wall Quay

A young cyclist has been seriously injured following a terrifying hit and run in Dublin City late last night.

The victim, a man in his 20s, was airlifted to hospital when he was struck by a car on North Wall Quay at around 10:30pm.

The car involved in the hit-and-run fled the scene following the crash with the injured cyclist taken to Mater Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

A car which Gardai believe to have been involved in the incident was recovered at Castleforbes Square a short time later.

A Garda manhunt is now underway to find the occupants of the vehicle involved.

North Wall Quay was closed to traffic for hours as multiple units of An Garda Siochana swarmed the area which was examined by forensics.

A source told Dublin Live that "four people were understood to have fled the scene" following the incident.

They added: "Shortly after the crash, a search happened at the nearby Castleforbes Road and the scene there was sealed off."

Many on social media reported the deafening sirens that filled the air while the garda helicopter flew over the city centre for several hours.

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "Gardaí at Store Street are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision involving a cyclist and a car in Dublin on Monday 31st August 2020.

"At approximately 10.30pm a male cyclist aged in his 20s was seriously injured when he was struck by a car on North Wall Quay.

"The car involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene. The injured cyclist was taken by Ambulance to the Mater Hospital.

"His condition is understood to be serious. The scene was examined by Garda forensic collision investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic."

He continued: "A car understood to have been involved in the incident was recovered at Castleforbes Square a short time later by Gardaí. No arrests have been made to date and investigations are ongoing.

"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and in particular to anyone who was in the area of the North Wall Quay, North Wall Avenue, East Wall Road, Sheriff Street Upper, Castleforbes Road or Castleforbes Square between 10.15pm and 10.30pm to come forward.

"They are also appealing to road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at the time to make it available to them."

He concluded: "Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Store Street Garda station 01 6668000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
