Young man's body washes up on Kilmacreehy Beach in Co Clare

Gardaí in Co Clare are investigating the discovery of a man’s body which is believed to have washed up on a beach early on Friday.

The body was found by a walker on Kilmacreehy Beach between Lahinch and Liscannor at around 11.00am. The beach is popular locally with walkers.

Gardaí responded to the scene and located a body near the high water mark close to a local pitch and putt club.

High tide was at around 8.45am yesterday and it’s believed the body was washed up with the tide.

The body was fully clothed and is believed to be that of a male in his 20s or 30s.

It’s not known who the man is or where he entered the water but is understood to have been in the sea for between 24 and 48 hours.

Gardaí preserved the scene pending the arrival of Crime Scene Investigation officers who documented and photographed the area.

The body was then recovered from the beach to the carpark of the pitch and putt club.

Later, a hearse removed the remains to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.

Gardaí have confirmed that they have had no report of any missing person locally and are checking missing persons lists across the other Garda regions in an effort to identify the man.

A Garda spokesman also confirmed that, at present, they are not treating the death as suspicious.

The spokesman added: “The body is that of a male in his 20s or 30s and is believed to have been in the water for 24 to 48 hours.

"The county coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination will take place at University Hospital Limerick.”

“At the moment we do not believe the death is suspicious but we will await the results of the post-mortem examination before making a final determination.

"We don’t have any identification for this man and we are working to establish that by checking missing persons lists,” the spokesman added.

Gardaí at Ennistymon are investigating the discovery and anyone with information, or who can assist Gardaí with identifying the body, can contact the station 065 7072180.
